Properties of aluminium

An overview of the properties of aluminium

Aluminium has many properties:

  • Light: The material has a density of 2.7 g/cm3. This is roughly one-third the density of steel.
  • Strong: Aluminium is a strong material. The exact strength depends on the type of alloy used.
  • Corrosion resistance: Depending on the alloy used, aluminium offers good corrosion resistance. When exposed to oxygen, the material will form a thin layer of oxide. This layer protects the aluminium casting against corrosion. A new oxide layer will form when the material is exposed to oxygen.
  • Durable: Aluminium has a lifespan of decades. In addition to its long lifespan, this material is also easily recyclable without compromising its quality. Melting down aluminium only requires 5% of the energy needed to produce primary aluminium. In the Netherlands, circa 72% of all aluminium is eventually recycled. In the construction and transport sectors, that figure is as high as 94%. By definition, the aluminium used for casting consists of recycled material.
  • Excellent machinability: The material is ideally suited for machining. Depending on the alloy and casting method used, aluminium is also suitable for welding. Machining aluminium is circa 70% faster than machining steel.
  • Good conductivity: Aluminium offers exceptional thermal and electrical conductivity. The ratio between weight and conductivity of aluminium is twice as good as that of copper. Consequently, the material is often used for cooling and heating systems.
  • Excellent formability: Due to its low melting temperature, aluminium is easy to form and therefore ideally suited for casting.
  • Easy to decorate: Depending on the alloy used, the aluminium surface can be decorated by anodising, polishing, chrome-plating or painting it. As an added benefit, this offers added protection to the material.
  • Vapour-tight and non-toxic: The material does not release any toxic substances and is 100% vapour-tight. It is therefore commonly used to package consumption goods and medicines.
  • Rich supply: The Earth's crust consists of 8% aluminium. After oxygen and silicon, it is the most common element on our planet.
